The Nounós Creamery story so far

When Nounós Creamery – known for its quality Greek yogurt and commitment to sustainability – wanted to add a 16oz offering to their product portfolio, they turned to Greiner Packaging’s K3® Cup. Since the launch, Nounos sales grew over 150% with increased margins, showing a strong consumer preference for the new packaging.

About Nounos Creamery

Having spent their summers and college years in the Mediterranean, Steven Ioannou and his Nounó (God Father), John Belesis, were dissatisfied with the ‘Greek-style’ yogurts available in the States. So, they began experimenting with their own handcrafted yogurt recipe.

The pair created Nounós Creamery and introduced bag-strained yogurt to New York in 2013. The thick, velvety rich, all natural yogurt quickly caught on. In January 2017, New York State certified the bag-strained yogurt to be sold outside of the region, and now yogurt lovers across the nation, and beyond can enjoy the taste of real Greek yogurt.

Nounós yogurt stands out in the crowded dairy market through its dedication to health, tradition, and sustainability, setting a new standard for what consumers can expect from their yogurt.

Choosing a Packaging Partner for their New 16oz Product

From the start, Nounós chose to pack its single-serve yogurt in glass pots. Nounós’ loyal consumers love the glass pots, and they’ve quickly become a staple of the brand. When Nounós decided to add a 16oz, multi-serve tub to their product lineup, the challenge became clear. They needed to find a sustainable packaging option that consumers would love like their iconic single-serve glass pots.

After vetting many potential options, it became clear that the Greiner K3® Cup would be the choice thanks to its sustainable cardboard-plastic material combination.

“Right from the start, we chose to pack our single-serve naturally authentic yogurt in sustainable glass pots, which are loved by our consumers,” says John Belesis, co-founder of Nounós Creamery. “For the new launch of our 16oz probiotic strained yogurt, we have chosen Greiner Packaging’s sustainable K3® cardboard-plastic combination.”
“We wanted to add a probiotic variant and at the same time be able to offer a more accessible price point, while competing with other larger yogurt tubs commonly available in most retail locations. Working with Greiner Packaging at its Pittston facility has enabled Nounós Creamery to diversify its portfolio and gain momentum in the competitive U.S. retail sector.”

Staying True to Their Sustainability Commitment with Greiner’s K3® Cup

The cardboard wrap on Greiner Packaging’s innovative K3® cardboard-plastic combination provides stability, so the cup can be produced with thinner walls and less material, reducing its CO2 footprint. The cup and wrap can be easily separated, which is important for recyclability. As the cup is always white or transparent, it produces high quality recyclates not contaminated by any inks.

The move to the K3® Cup aligns with the growing consumer demand for sustainable products and showcases Nounós' dedication to not just the quality of their yogurt, but also to the health of the planet. Nounós not only elevates the consumer experience but also contributes to a larger movement towards sustainability in the food industry, setting a powerful example for others to follow

The Results: A Sustainable Driver of Growth

Since transitioning to the Greiner K3® cup for their multi-serve yogurt, Nounos experienced a significant positive impact on both sales and profitability. The shift has resulted in a sales increase of over 150%, demonstrating strong consumer preference for the updated packaging. Additionally, Nounos improved cost of goods, further reinforcing the economic benefits of this change.

The K3® cup's lightweight and sustainable design aligns well with market trends favoring environmentally friendly packaging, while its superior shelf presence has contributed to increased brand visibility and consumer engagement. The switch to Greiner packaging also drove improvements in operational efficiency, further boosting margins.

"Overall, the move to the K3 cup has been a resounding success, driving both top-line growth and bottom-line profitability while supporting our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”
