Eye-catching packaging for extraordinary dips

Hamburg-based start-up Edmund is all about chilled, organic vegan dips that appeal to consumers thanks to their intense flavor, top quality standards, and attention-grabbing brand communications. The brand has literally been sticking its green tongue out at its customers since March 2022; Edmund wants to get itself noticed in the refrigerated section. So it is no surprise that the packaging for the dips also stands out: Edmund uses sustainable cardboard-plastic solutions, which have not been widely used in the savory spreads and pâté market segment until now.

Available in three varieties – dried tomato, date curry, and garlic harissa – Edmund’s organic, cashew-based spreadable dips are packaged in 150-gram K3®-H cups, so they have hollow bottoms that are also covered by FSC-certified cardboard. The inner cup is made of transparent PP, while the inside of the cardboard sleeve is printed in a single color and carries information about the Edmund brand and its communication channels. On the outside, a matte coating on the cardboard wrap adds the finishing touch.

Tasty or sustainable? Both!

“There is no need to choose between intense flavor and sustainability in the recipe or packaging. That’s something we want to prove with our products. The green tongue on the packaging is meant to raise awareness of the fact that food can be tasty, healthy, and environmentally responsible at the same time,” says Edmund Bruns, 32, the company’s founder.

Eco-friendly packaging solution

The decision to market the dips in cardboard-plastic combinations is easy to explain. The packaging stands out in the refrigerated section of stores not only due to its attractive design – an unusual choice in this market category – but also because it boasts several positive attributes when it comes to sustainability. The cardboard wrap lends sturdiness to the plastic cup so that it can be produced with particularly thin walls.

Plus, the wrap is especially easy for consumers to detach from the cup thanks to a tear-off system, with the two components then disposed of separately and recycled. Since the transparent plastic cup is unprinted, it can be recycled very effectively. In addition, the carbon footprint of K3® cups is significantly smaller than that of alternative packaging solutions.
