One Austrian dairy company is keeping pace with the convenience trend without compromising on sustainability – Berglandmilch is filling cups with delicious cottage cheese for its customer, Dukat, that feature an integrated fold-out cardboard spoon in the lid.
Coming in a huge range of different varieties, cottage cheese is enjoyed in many countries as a popular and healthy snack between meals. Cottage cheese is an integral part of health-conscious consumers’ diets – not only at home, but also at the office or increasingly while on the go.
And Berglandmilch was eager to keep it convenient to enjoy on the move even after the ban on single-use plastic cutlery in the EU from July 3, 2021. As a result, the dairy manufacturer decided to offer its customer Dukat its curds and whey in packaging with an integrated fold-out cardboard spoon in the future, replacing the plastic spoon previously used. This makes Dukat one of the first brands to bring Greiner Packaging’s fold-out cardboard spoon to market. The advantages are clear to see from the practical fold-out spoon’s material properties, as it can be easily and conveniently disposed of in the paper loop and recycled after use.
We have been working together with Greiner Packaging for many years now, and we are delighted that a workable solution was offered to us in time before the ban on single-use plastic cutlery comes into effect. Going forward, this will allow our customer to continue providing its popular spoonable cheese for on-the-go consumption.

Communicating with the end consumer through the packaging is becoming increasingly important. This is also true for Danone, where recipes are printed directly onto the packaging.
